His dog wasn't simply a household pet. It was a working animal, and like so many Newfoundland dogs of the time, it was part of the family business. The animal hauled fishing nets, fetched buoys, pulled carts loaded with cod, and even went to sea with its master.

Then tragedy struck.

Far from shore, the dog was killed.

But this wasn't an ordinary death.

According to the legend, the dog was decapitated.

And that's where the story becomes something much darker.

Some versions say the dog fell through rapidly shifting ice and was killed. Others claim it died during a violent schooner wreck. Whatever the circumstances, the animal's story apparently didn't end with its death.

Because after sunset, people claimed to see something impossible.
