UFO's in Newfoundland & Labrador

Oct. 04, 1967, is known as the night of the UFOs in Nova Scotia.

Sightings of a huge sphere-shaped object with a dull orange glow were reported around 9 pm by residents of Shag Harbour, Dartmouth, Sambro, and Wedgeport, and even the crew of the MV Nickerson saw an object with three flashing lights, and it showed up on their radar about 25 kilometers away.

But

Did you know Newfoundland and Labrador has its own share of UFO encounters?

I interviewed several RCMP officers who told me about their encounters with Unidentified Flying Objects.

During the 1940s and 50s, military officers regularly reported UFOs over the Goose Bay Air Force Base in Labrador.

In the spring of 1970, two RCMP Officers were returning from a call in the Torbay- Middle Cove area around two a.m. They parked the police car in a layover area just before Middle Cove Beach to write up notes about the incident while it was still fresh in their minds.

As the two sat scribbling in their notebooks, a very bright white light hovered over the ocean and lit up the whole sky, coming over the car at not more than 20 feet away.

They had no idea what it was, so for fun they put on the red light, and the bright white light changed to red.  In the 1970s, police cars had the old-fashioned ‘cherry on top’ light. They flashed their headlights, and it flashed its light back. They turned on the siren, and it made the siren sound back.  Then they blew the horn, and it made the sound of the horn.

The officers said it was dense; you couldn’t see through it. At times, a beacon of light came out of it and went right down to the water. It would shoot up and come back down at incredible speed, and it was as big as a 737 aircraft.

They contacted the radio room at St. John’s HQ and asked that they contact the airport to see if anything showed up on radar. The air traffic tower confirmed there were no aircraft or helicopters in the area.

The most famous case was in Clarenville, Newfoundland, in 1978. An RCMP Constable was one of a dozen locals who witnessed a cigar-shaped aircraft hovering over the water between Clarenville and Random Island. The officer turned on the police lights on top of the cruiser, and the UFO mimicked the flashing lights. He claimed the UFO stayed in the area for about an hour and a half, then it took off like a shooting star and disappeared into the sky.

In 2010, I was the RCMP’s Senior Communications Strategist and became the spokesperson for the UFO’s over Harbour Mille. A woman out for a walk was shocked to see 3 thin rockets rise from the ocean into space; each had a tail of fire and smoke. She took a photo, then called the RCMP immediately.  NORAD and the military were contacted, but neither had any knowledge of training or ships in the area.

It was never explained.

The truth is out there, but are we ready to find it?
