Who Put Bella in the Wych Elm?

Imagine walking through an English woodland and finding a human skull inside a hollow tree.

Now imagine discovering that the woman it belonged to had been murdered, hidden there, and left unidentified for more than eighty years.

In April 1943, during the Second World War, four boys entered Hagley Wood in Worcestershire, England, searching for birds’ nests.

One of them climbed an old Wych elm and peered into its hollow trunk.

What he saw stopped him cold.

A human skull.

Police were called, and investigators discovered the remains of a woman concealed inside the tree. Investigators believed she was between 35 and 40 years old. A piece of fabric was found in her mouth, and a wedding ring was among the evidence recovered.

The woman had been murdered.

But who was she?

No one could identify her. No family came forward. No one had reported her missing.

The police had a facial reconstruction done – still no one claimed her.

Then, in the months that followed, strange graffiti began appearing around the area.

Four chilling words:

“Who put Bella in the Wych Elm?”

Bella.

Someone had apparently given the unidentified woman a name.

But who wrote the message? Was it someone who knew the killer? Someone involved in the crime? Or simply a person exploiting a gruesome mystery?

Theories began to circulate.

Some suggested Bella was a German spy, murdered during wartime espionage. Others imagined an occult ritual or a secret political killing.

But none of these theories have been proven.

And the most disturbing part?

The woman's remains were eventually lost or misplaced, making modern forensic identification far more difficult.

So, more than eighty years later, we still don't know who Bella was, who killed her, or why her body was hidden inside that tree.

A woman vanished from the world, leaving behind only a skeleton and a question.

Who put Bella in the Wych Elm?

And perhaps the most haunting question of all:

Who was Bella before she became a mystery?
