Monster of Miramichi

The Monster of Miramichi, serial killer Allan Legere, has died at 78 years old in prison.

Allan Legere terrorized the Miramichi area for seven months in 1989.

Legere was called the ‘Monster of the Miramichi’ for the crimes he committed, including rape, arson and murder.

His reign of terror began in May 1989, when he escaped from prison guards escorting him to a medical appointment in Moncton, New Brunswick. That is about 120 kilometres south of the Miramichi region.

He had been in prison for the murder of shopkeeper John Glendenning and the beating of Glendenning's wife, Mary.

During his escape, more than 700 police personnel were searching for Legere. While on the run, he sneaked in and out of communities along the Miramichi River, brutally murdering four more people in three separate attacks.

Legere murdered Chatham storeowner Annie Flam, who was 75 years old, in her home.

Five months later, sisters Donna and Linda Daughney were murdered in their Newcastle home. Five weeks after that, a 69-year-old Catholic priest, Father James Smith, was killed in the church rectory.

Legere not only murdered these four people, but he also spent hours torturing them before their deaths, according to an account of the crimes by the New Brunswick Court of Appeal Justice, Lewis Ayles.

Nine days after Smith's murder, Legere was arrested in the city of Miramichi.

In November 1991, he was convicted on four counts of first-degree murder and given a life sentence. He was declared a dangerous offender, a designation that allows for permanent incarceration.

Last year, Legere was denied a request for full parole. The Parole Board of Canada's decision said Legere still posed an ‘undue risk to society’ if released.

He died in prison this past Monday, March 10th, 2026, while serving a life sentence at an Edmonton Institution.

His death will bring relief to Miramichi.

The monster of Miramichi has gone to hell, where he belongs.
